1) OUR CONCEPTION OF GOD
The most important thing about us is what comes into our minds when we think about God–for what we personally believe about God today will to a large degree determine where our church (collectively) will stand tomorrow.
2) UNDERSTANDING THE INCOMPREHENSIBLE
Is there such a thing even possible? We know that whatever we visualize God to be–that is not Him–for we can only construct mental images out of what we can see, or that which God has made; and what He has made is not God.
3) ATTRIBUTES OF THE DIVINE
Love is an attribute of God but love is not God. Love expresses the way God is,just like the words holiness, just, faithful, and true also do. If God were literally love, then love would be literally God, and we would be duty bound to worship love.
4) GOD IS FOREVER
In our world, time marks the beginning and end of everything. There is a time to be born, a time to live, and a time to die–but for God no such time cycle exists. God lives in an everlasting now. He is the Great “I Am.”
5) CONSIDERING GOD’S HUMANITY
How could the Eternal God ever be born? How could the Omnipresent God ever be confined to flesh and blood? How could the Self-existent God ever die? And why were no sacrifical lambs ever raised to life–except the Lamb of God?
6) OUR SAVIOR AND KING
A. W. Tozer once wrote. “All that God is He has always been, and all that He has been and is He will ever be.” Nevertheless, God has given us mortals the privilege of getting to know Him, by providing us with biblical symbols which help us understand Him.
